The muffled "kerploof" of the mailbox door opening down, reveals a handwritten postcard. It says ". . . you bring me so much hope," love, Wendy." During a time of isolation and sameness, this moment feels different. I feel the comfort of 29 words of tonic warming as it descends. I feel validated, like what I do in my life makes a difference.
In SoulMates, Thomas Moore talks about mail as soulful--mundane daily steps are necessary ingredients for our soul. The day itself is ritual, made of moments to savor. Like handwritten messages, private envelope spaces where we seal our thoughts, place them in secret boxes and poof, the message disappears and magically reappears elsewhere. And important to mention that the stamp in the upper right corner is likely a miniature piece of art. The soul languishes in the capture of each moment of the experience.
If we want to make a difference, we write someone a note. If we are bored, we write someone a note. Not an email or a text, but a real, hold-it-in-your-hand snack to feed two souls.
